Electronic Smoking is a Problem Amongst Teens Tobacco use begins in childhood, and 88% of adult smokers reported they started smoking by age 18. Electric smoking is increasing drastically amongst teens. Electronic cigs and vapes are becoming popular because they are convenient, have very little smell, and can be hidden easily. Nationwide more than 23% of high schoolers reported using some type of tobacco in the last 30 days. Electronic smoking has a negative effect on teenagers socially, psychologically, and psychically that leads to an unhealthy lifestyle at a young age. The Comtex News Network in The Dangers of E-Cigarettes/Vaping states, “E-cigs are likely safer than tobacco cigarettes, but the long-term effects are unknown.”(4) There are many chemicals in e-liquids that aren’t contained in cigarettes. Vapes are perceived to be safer than cigarettes but in most cases just as harmful. A lot of younger kids and teens are using e-cigs/vapes because the cool “clouds” they make but in reality the kids have no clue what they’re actually inhaling. Recent studies have shown they have the potential to weaken the immune system and cause inflammation and cell damage. E-cigs also shouldn’t be used to quit smoking because they still feed your nicotine addiction. The popularity of electronic smoking is growing faster than our ability to clearly understand the effects. The teenage smoking rate is actually at an all-time low, yet electronic smoking use is at an all-time high. Vapes and such devices aren’t only used by kids, usage amongst adults seem to be steadily increasing too. The e-liquids usually contain 95% propylene glycol and glycerin.
