For many years, there has been a great debate on the topic of whether to raise the minimum wage. Despite all the dispute, the consensus is still up in the air. Some states have already agreed to enact this movement, while others remain stagnant. Many have tried to argue of the benefits and downfalls of it. After researching heavily on the issue, I have come to concur that a push for minimum wage increase will result in individuals no longer living below the poverty line, government aid decreasing, and consumer spending increasing. Minimum wage should not be addressed as such, if anything, it should be called a “living wage”. Many arguments have been stated that they believe it’s absurd to pay more to employees compared to the value they create. (Hoar, W. P., 2016). However, in my view’s defense I can also say that they are also helping to contribute to decreased demand, higher taxes, and slowing economic growth. (Hanauer, N., 2016). Raising the minimum wage isn’t just about increasing incomes, it’s also about increasing human livelihood and well-being. It will help contribute to provide for basic needs in those who are already struggling, as well as helping them give back to the community as well. It will also benefit the government in savings, which can be allocated to other needed sources. Raising the minimum wage can pose as a huge advantage through helping individuals rise above the poverty line, save in government funding, and help increase consumer spending. This fight has been going on for so long, and evidence shows just how beneficial a minor change can make. If the issue is held at a standstill on the federal side, I encourage all individuals to try to make an impact through their state and local representatives.
