According to Merriam-Webster, “The purpose of the minimum wage was to stabilize the post-depression economy and protect the workers in the labor force. The minimum wage was designed to create a minimum standard of living to protect the health and well-being of employees.” Currently in the year 2018, many jobs do not offer healthcare to employees. Let alone, they do not create a minimum standard of living with the amount earned working nearly 40 hours a week. Prices have increased and are still continuously increasing while the minimum wage has remained the same in the previous years. The minimum wage is often thought that just only of teenagers but that is wrong. Approximately 76.5% of the minimum wage workers are over the age of 20 years old which allows for them to start and have families to support. Therefore, the minimum wage needs to be sufficient enough for a man or woman to raise a family especially if there income is the only one. The average income of a family of four should be around $24,339 but working full-time at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour only earns $15,080. If a man or woman is raising a family by themself, the the average income would be around $15,080. The same as above but the prices for raising a family differ slightly. As you can see, the minimum age is not appropriate for families of four or when someone is raising a family alone when they are making about $10,000 under the average income. To bring this into reality, these numbers are not the same if you live in certain areas like Houston, Texas where the price of living is around $60,600.
