Studying the boys around him, Ralph instructs, “We’ve got to have special people for looking after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there… and if we have a signal going they’ll come and take us off. And another thing. We ought to have more rules ”(42). Ralph understands that rules are beneficial to survival and takes responsibility for enforcing them.
The last example of a symbol from Lord of the Flies is the boys’ hair. The boys’ hair is meant to show how savage the boys are. When the boys embrace their long hair, it shows that they are accepting their savagery. In this quote, it describes how “Ralph stood, one hand holding back his hair, the other clenched” (Golding 66). This quote shows that Ralph isn’t fighting off his savagery and it is starting take over.
In the book, Lord Of The Flies, William Golding shows how not having a strong and good leadership, leads people to become savages, using examples of killing, breaking rules, etc. First, to have a strong society, a leader and a government has to have some rules which everyone follows. Same way in the book, Ralph tells everyone to follow the rules and gave the first rule to use the conch as a permission to speak but some people break this rule. For example, “Jack was the first to make himself heard.
“Well, we won’t be painted,” said Ralph, “because we aren’t savages” (172). There are many great leaders all over the world. To be a great leader one must have certain qualities including, being courageous, being responsible, willing to take charge, having all priorities straight on the important things, have determination, and many more. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph shows all of these characteristics and a few more. Out of every boy on the island, Ralph would be the best choice as leader.
Golding uses Ralph to show a valuable lesson that in order to be a succesful leader you must lead through rules and laws rather than fear and intimidation. This is because when there are no rules people tend to act out, as while they can't be
In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, there are many possible leaders. Ralph’s adversary on the Island had been Jack, who had been pushing to take over as leader. This caused a lot of controversy among the common people on who is the more powerful leader, rather than the most effective. Throughout the book Ralph has proven to be the better leader in two ways; he’s civilized and organized.
This can be shown in Chapter 5 where Ralph states “Now I say this and make it a rule, because I’m chief”. This shows Ralph taking charge and making it known that he is the leader and that everyone needs to listen to what he says. Ralph sets several rules for the boys on the island to follow. Some of these rules include “using the rocks for the lavatory, keeping the fire going, and showing smoke as a signal.” This shows Ralph as being responsible for trying to keep this on the island in check while still thinking about getting rescued from the island.
If I were to be in Lord of the Flies, and I had to pick someone to lead, it would’ve been Ralph. Ralph may have not been the strongest, or most ready to kill, but he still showed other strong qualities of leadership. He naturally steps up as the group’s leader, and despite not being the best leader, he still shows good qualities of a good leader. In the book, everybody has already chosen Ralph as their leader.
Certain traits and characteristics make a leader. For a leader to earn the trust of people and to make them understand his or her authority, he or she must get a few specific characteristics. The book Lord of the Flies establishes these traits in the character Ralph. Some of these key traits include maturity, integrity, and reliability.
For example, he made the rule that you can only talk in a meeting if you have the conch shell. Him establishing the rules is shown through Ralph saying, “There aren’t any grown-ups. We shall have to look after ourselves.”, and, “We’ll have to have ‘Hands up’ like at school.’. Additionally, like stated previously, all the same rules apply to everyone. He tries to be as fair as possible and he does not take advantage of the respect that he has garnered.
At first Jack Merridew wanted to take over the leadership over the boys but Ralph won the votes of the boys and took the leadership role. At the beginning Ralph was able to win the votes of the boys to become the leader, but since the beginning Jack expressed more qualities of a leader than Ralph. This is because Jack started with nothing but at the end of the book he had a larger tribe than Ralph. he was also able to please his tribe and also gave them the freedom they wanted he did not overworked them like Ralph did. In the text it quotes “Bollocks to the rules!
The ideal leader demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility. In the novel Lord of the Flies, Ralph exemplifies this quality when he takes over the boys and tries to maintain the order of the island. Golding writes, “We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We are English, and the English are best at everything” (Golding 24).
Good leaders skillfully manage tense topics and situations. In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is the best leader because he is selfless, appreciative of others, and diplomatic. The first good leadership quality Ralph possesses is selflessness, he prioritizes everyone’s safety and comfort over his own desires. Jack returns to the beach from hunting to see Ralph working on the shelters with only help from Simon.
And we 'll look for the snake too--"(Golding 44) Jack says he’ll hunt it he was unable to kill a pig and yet expects himself to be able to kill a beastie. Jack says this to make himself appear stronger than he is. "Serve you right if something did get you, you useless lot of cry-babies! But there is no animal--"(Golding 96)
This is a terrible leadership quality. A third reason why Ralph’s style of leadership is better is that Ralph knew what was best for the boys overall. He was always looking for the boys best interest and had good intent, while Jack’s dictatorship consisted of Jack thriving off of the power making only himself feel good and trying to make that last. In the novel Lord of the Flies, there are various types of leaderships evident. Ralph and Jack, both showed a great sense of leadership on the island and towards
