The article “Hip Hop Planet” by James McBride is about how hip hop is not his favorite type of music but, it needs to be heard. McBride shows us this by explaining that he avoided hip hop most of his life. In the article McBride says that he basically ignored “the most important cultural event in my lifetime.” James informs us that hip hop has influenced the world globally and that it has become a phenomenon. Furthermore, McBride made clear that he eventually realized that hip hop is much more than just music, it has a message.
We live in a world that progresses based on the words and actions of one another. Each individual has the capability to transcend and revolutionize the standards and conditions of society. There are several methods in which an individual can advocate for social change in society. An example of this advocacy has been artist in the hip-hop industry that have turned too music as a method to express their opinion on these social conditions. Hip-hop artists such as 2Pac and Kanye West have used music to express their opinion about the social injustice that America has oppressed upon its residents and citizens.
Hip-hop has changed a lot since its first introduction into the world; Hip-hop was once looked at as an art form, nowadays some say it’s just a get rich quick scheme. When you look back at the history of it you would see how before people who rap had something to talk about either it was a current events or a life changing experience, But now people talk about the money they have and the thing they can buy and what not. If you ask me the art form is Gone. I think an artist like “Joey Badass” or “nas” still hold the trust essence of the art form Joey some say has brought a Sub-genres known as “Boom Bap” to the for front.
It has also been known to tackle issues such as equality as well as political issues. Most would even agree that it influences decision making by influencing human behavior. Hip-hop offers a way of being able to connect with others. Most importantly it has the power to empower women. For example, Queen Latifah’s rap song Unity speaks out against lack of respect towards black women.
Dr. Dyson presents the problem of misogyny and the exploitation of minority groups in rap music in a way that still makes the artist accountable, while reminding us that these exploitations have always been in western society. Dr. Dyson is saying that rap music is not all equal and can push unhealthy ideas about the relationship between men and women. Yet there is still a culture value within the music that many people within the the African American community can connect with, even if that connection is a sad reflection on the current status of affairs. For example, many rap songs glorify prison, which is a sad example of the disproportional effect that prison has within the black community. Some black men grow up thinking that is where they belong because so many in their family’s have ended there for crimes that are common among everyone but are most punishable on blacks.
Hip-hop music has changed the world over the years and has influences in all aspects of modern culture including film, fashion, and sports. Rap/Hip-hop is one of the most popular music genres of our time, dating back to the 1960s. In fact, studies show that hip-hop music had more influence on pop music from the 1960s all the way to 2010. I can provide facts all day about rap music but how much do you know about the genre in general? “Rap” is a very old word.
In hip hop music; it is important to have a unique sound and flavor. The only way to differ ones self from the rest of the artists in the genre is to create your own style. In hip-hop, all things seem to center around the concepts of: flow, layering, and ruptures in the line. In hip hop, music can be displayed in many different angles from circular motion, scripted phrases moving horizontally, to a abruptly breaking the beat in order to create fluidity and flow. Rapping in songs privileges the idea of flow, layering and ruptures in the line.
Slaves would in some cases exchange sentiments of their songs and narratives to oppose the real meaning of their lyrics. When singing about oppression or the unfair conditions of their slavery, slaves would use tunes that implied that they were singing songs of joy (Sundquist, 2006). This made sure that only the slaves identified with their true emotions since they all share deep cultural backgrounds and had a good understanding of the situation they were facing. Hip-hop uses the same strategy in passing its message. Hip hop, just like most of the 20th and 21st centuries music genres, it identifies with loud beats and controversial words.
Jay Sean, “Down”, gives us his perspective on how to achieve the love of a girl that you have been desiring to have in a simple and romantic way. We can see this representing throughout the word options, examples on how to accomplish, and giving his justification on how hard he will try to successfully achieve the lover. In this delightful piece of Sean song, he gives us a warm hearted explanation on how he is feeling and shows how pursuing it can be to chase after the girl you like or love. Sean will also constantly ask the most rhetorical questions in the song which is, “Baby are you down, down, down, down, down, down, down”. Having to say that, in this song , Lil Wayne is featured in this composition too and he contradicts his ways on what he will take to do and have the
This empowerment gives Black America a voice and a role in society. Despite negative themes in the lyrics of hip-hop, it still remains a positive aspect of America through its empowerment. Hip-hop goes beyond the music; in fact, Hip-hop grew to become a defining aspect of America. Hip-hop is the single defining aspect of Black American culture. However, due to the often negative images associated with hip-hop, its societal influence and importance can often be overlooked.
Obviously, telling a story is not bad. Many blame the lyrics in songs, but they are just telling a story. In article “Six Reasons You Should Let Your Child Listen to Hip Hop” by Ross Simmonds, he states “If you follow hip-hop closely you can agree that there isn’t really a balance between the good or bad”. I agree with this statement because it agrees with my opinion.
The music world is slowly spiraling downward. I don’t like hip hop music because the lyrics are shameful nowadays and the beat is overwhelming. Back in the 70’s that generation voiced their opinions and views through the hip hop music. Hip hop in this current generation has very shameful lyrics and provoke negative ideas. The world of hip hop consist of drugs, violence, and viewing girls negatively.
Nevertheless, the music has always been misunderstood. But, Rap is more that, it’s a part of music that confronts the struggles that society hides under the rug. That’s where Hip-Hop/Rap comes in to unveil the truth. Throughout history, Hip-Hop/Rap made acclaim through its generic storytelling, unapologetic rhymes, and explosive sound. The music took the world by storm with an urge to party in the Bronx.

There has been a long time of Hip Hop that has been reactant, communicating disappointments in a culture around bigotry for instance, in the late 1980 's, quite a bit of what we catch wind of with respect to police ruthlessness, stop and search routines and focusing on dark skinned youth.
