In the article “Die Trying”, Katie J.M. Baker points out the difficulties of being a rape victim in Alabama and nationwide. The article “Die Trying” talks about a student named Megan Rondini who attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa who accused T.J. Bunn Jr. of rape. The events that led to sexual assault happened in July 1, 2015 at night where Megan Rondini went to Innisfree Irish Pub with a couple of her sorority sisters and drank five cups of beer. After drinking the beer Megan Rondini blacked out and found herself in T.J. Bunn’s car with his friend going back to his house.
The Duke lacrosse case implicated criminal actions of: first degree rape, first degree sex offenses’ and kidnapping charges against three Duke University lacrosse players; Collin Finnerty, Reade Seligman and Dean Evans (North Carolina State Bar v. Nifong, 2007,p.18-20). According to Mosteller (2007) the case started with “gang rape allegations” by Crystal Mangum, a black exotic dancer who was also a student at North Carolina Central University on the morning of March 14th, 2006 (p.1337). The alleged rape occurred during the Duke lacrosse teams’ party at 610 North Buchanan Blvd (North Carolina State Bar v. Nifong, 2007,p.1). Suspiciously Mangum could not make any identifications of her attackers even after viewing most Duke lacrosse team members including the names mentioned above and the lacrosse team members who actually lived at 610 North Buchanan Blvd (Mosteller, 2007, p.1407). The fall of 1994, Christy Brzonkala a Virginia native entered her first year of college at enrolled at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). September of that year, Brzonkala met Antonio Morrison and James Crawford, both students at Virginia Tech. These two boys, members of the varsity football team, allegedly assaulted and repeatedly raped Christy, within 30 minutes of meeting her. After the attack, Morrison allegedly told Brzonkala, “You better not have any … diseases.” (UNITED STATES V MORRISON).

During a chief examination, he stated his actions throughout the whole ordeal. Several panicked women rushed into the residence’s common building and reported the issue, Adam Casey, asked if they’d called 911 and the women responded that they had then he ran to where the assault was occurring.
On February 7, 1978, the 19-year-old student that attended the College of William and Mary reported that she was sexually assaulted at gunpoint. She informed police investigators that on that afternoon she went to her “fiancé’s apartment in Williamsburg, Virginia after her morning class was cancelled. Later, Briles recruited two of the players after they had already been kicked off the football team. There was evidence that Briles along with other members of the program let the teammates rape girls. They never disciplined, never told anyone, but the word got out. When a female athlete came up to Briles and mentioned that she had been raped by one of the football players Briles chose not to tell any of the higher-ups and to just let it go. The girl didn’t want to report it to the police so she only told Briles and her coach about the situation.
One in five women and one in sixteen men are sexually assaulted while in college. 63% of sexual assaults are not reported to police and only about 2 to 10% of reports are found to be false. In Jon Krakauer’s book: Missoula, Rape and the Justice System in a College Town. Krakauer focuses on the many rapes that occur on the college campus in Missoula. Most of the rapes that happen on college campuses are done by men, but to say all men are rapists is unjust and sexist.
On June 14th, 1920 Sandra Teal went to the fair that was in town with her boyfriend Robert Walsh, and later that night she claimed six black circus workers raped her. The report of the rape was called in early morning of June 15th by Robert Walsh’s father. There was little to no evidence to support these claims and an examination of Sandra by Dr. David Graham, a family physician, showed no physical signs of rape or assault. Six black men were arrested that day and immediately brought to the Duluth police station. As news spread around Duluth about what allegedly happened, a mob started to form and by the time the mob decided to force its way into the police station estimates had the mob as large as ten thousand people.
According to the research of Kimberly Lonsway and police sergeant Joanne Archambault, when an individual is raped in the United States, 96% of the time the rapist dodges the crime. The majority of these rapes do not go through the prosecution process and when they do, less than 0.2% of these perpetrators spend time in a prison cell (Krakauer 121). The main cause of this ongoing problem is the ineffective and unfair representation of rape victims by the justice system. Jon Krakauer argues this point in his novel, Missoula: Rape in a College Town and the Justice System, using narratives as his main focus of support. Did you know that only 310 out of every 1,000 sexual assaults are reported? Melinda was one of the 690 people that didn’t report her sexual assault. Speak was about this girl named Melinda and she had something happen to her right before school started and she didn’t tell anyone. Then as the school year progressed she wasn’t making any friends and even the only friend she had unfriended her. THen at the end she finally told someone.
In the summer of 2002, Brian Banks, a 16-year-old outstanding high school football linebacker from Long Beach Polytechnic High in Southern California had a promising future ahead of him. He had a verbal agreement to play for USC once he finished high school, but he had a lot of recruitment letters coming to him. Unfortunately, his future was cut short. Wanetta Gibson, a 15-year-old who also attended Long Beach Polytechnic, had accused Brian Banks of rape. That summer morning, Wanette and Brian were making out in the stairwell of the school, that night, Brian was being arrested for rape.
A high school freshman of Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino, was raped at an end-of-the-summer party. Due to accidently busting the party, she spent most of the school year being avoided by her peers. Victoria suffered massive injuries during the beating. She had a concussion, eye and ear damage, and bruises. Victoria had nightmares about the severe beating. The bad thing is that the classmates recorded this three minute video so the beating could be put on YouTube.
2 Bellevue High Students Under Investigation for Alleged Rape of 14-year-old Girl Police in Clyde Hill are instigating two 16-year-old students form Bellevue High School for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl at a house party in Yarrow Point this April. All three teenagers attended the party together on April 1st where they reportedly consumed large quantities of alcohol before the alleged rape occurred. The girl did not realize she had been assaulted until later the next day when she noticed abdominal cramping and blood on her shoes. Her suspicion was confirmed by a rape kit performed at Harborview Medical Center and by photos of the attack that appeared on social media. In society and college campuses, sexual assault occurs quite frequently. According to an estimation one third of women experience a forced sexual experience at least once in their life and most of the time it occurs in colleges. Men have also been reported to be victim of sexual assaults mostly by other men. Most of the time the sexual assault is planned and perpetrated by a third person, who is known to the victim of incident. Drug and alcohol use play role in this issue and contribute to the problem as most of the time the victim and perpetrators are under the effect of alcohol or any other drug during the incident.
