The tale of Romeo and Juliet is one that has been told throughout history. It tells of 2 teenagers who come from rival households. They fall in love, get married and a fight between the main character Romeo and Juliet’s Cousin, Tybalt, results in Tybalt's death. Romeo is then banished and only returns when he finds out about Juliet’s death. He kills himself to be with her forever and when she awakes from her sleep, her husband is dead so she kills herself as well. While this may not be the story that high school seniors face, there are several pieces throughout this story that still happen today. This story is a perfect example of jumping to conclusions and making choices without much consideration of their outcomes. While a teenage romance may sound like the perfect story, the conclusion to these events allows the reader to see a scenario where thinking with your heart could result in calamity. Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, is valuable and relevant for high school students because it shows important social dynamics and the consequences of rash decisions, even though some may argue that the play is not relevant because it is just a story of two young star crossed lovers. When Romeo and Juliet got married, they didn’t tell anyone that they didn’t need to know. At this time, parents choose a husband for their daughters, which would provide some sort of arrangement between the two families. Juliet’s parents found a man by the name of Paris for her to marry, but she was in love with Romeo and because of a lack of communication between both parties, she felt she couldn’t live anymore. With hormones in teenagers, the simplest of things can cause a disagreement and result in an altercation. A statistic from the National Center for Education in 2019 states that 15% of the students they surveyed have been involved in a physical altercation on school property. This coupled with the amount of people who have witnessed these events, gives background information and can help a high school student imagine the scenario from events they have seen in their lives. Students when asked to read Romeo and Juliet may be uninterested because it is just a love story or has no impact on them. Several of the things teenagers today talk about or do appear in this play.
