The play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, shows numerous examples of modern-day issues that teens and young adults struggle with; such as addiction and emotional impulsivity. The play introduces the two main characters; Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. Together, they meet and fall in love at first sight. Romeo’s character is portrayed as sensitive, intelligent, and immature, but passionate. While Juliet’s character is portrayed as imaginative, emotional, both independent and dependent, and intuitive. They both share the concept of innocence and childlike characteristics. They would have hardly known each other at this point, but because they are both blind-sighted by their emotions, they forget to realize how big of an impact this can have on their lives. This is also a huge example of addiction. They are constantly thinking about their love for one another, but they cannot control their emotions which can lead to even more chaos and impulsiveness. In Act 5 scene 3, Romeo goes to Juliet's tomb and becomes so overwhelmed with grief. He has just realized that his living “Drug” is dead, and feels like he can't live without her. So he decided to take his own life. This emotional impulsivity is also evident in Juliet's decision to fake her own death in order to escape her family's expectations.
