The police get a lot of hate about having to use force but it's just because of their job. Force and weapons is the most effective way for the police to do there job. A lot of the time police officers have to use weapons and force or the threat of violence. This is a way to protect themselves and do there duty. This could get people to succumb to the police but, other people argue that they would be more effective if they used voice and reason instead of violence and force. The suspect isn’t going to listen to you using appeal and reason. If a criminal was armed and a law enforcement official tried using reason and talking to them it could put them in danger of being harmed by that criminal, it just wouldn’t make sense to put themselves in danger by trying to talk. There is a reason behind the use of force and weaponry. An article says, “The reasonableness of the use of force should also be evaluated by considering, the severity of the crime at issue, whether the suspect poses an immediate threat to the safety of the officers or others and, whether the suspect is actively resisting arrest or attempting to evade arrest by flight.” (Paragraph 5) For example the book The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy states, “We don’t want to shoot you Beeblebrox!”(Adams 205) There is a lot of reason behind the ways of force being used and it's because of the safety of the officers. This shows that the motive isn’t to hurt you or shoot you. They don’t want to do that but it's just a part of the job, especially if the suspect isn't going to listen. In some cases you can use reasoning and appeal to them instead of using a more forceful way and using weapons to enforce the law. Force and weapons are less humane to human life and it could cause fatalities to the harmer or the officer. According to the United Nations “Law enforcement officials, in their relations with persons in custody or detention, shall not use firearms, except in self-defense or in the defense of others against the immediate threat of death or serious injury, or when strictly necessary to prevent the escape of a person in custody or detention presenting the danger.” (Paragraph 9) This supports the fact that weapons shouldn’t be used unless necessary because it can be inhumane.
