Mrs. Putnam accused Rebecca out of jealousy and believed that she is responsible for the death of her seven infant children; which led her to accused Rebecca being a witch. Mrs. Putnam is jealous of Rebecca, seeing that Rebecca had many successful labor, while many of her had been unsuccessful. Proctor saw her when Deputy Governor Danforth, the main judge in the witchcraft trials, brought her in. Danforth brought her in hopes of getting Rebecca to confess like Proctor; however his plan backfired on him.
If I were taking advice from someone, I would listen to the person with the most experience and knowledge on the subject. In Arthur MIller's "The Crucible" Rebecca Nurse seems the most fit to hold that role. Since she is a peacemaker, wise and valued she is very important in the community. Rebecca is wise to child care.
In addition, one cause of the Salem Witch Trial hysteria was sexism. Evidence of this is from the Salem Court Records where out of 20 people executed for witchcraft 14 were women and six were men(Doc A). This evidence shows that there were more women than men being executed and accused of witchcraft. The people were sexist against women because they weren’t as many men being executed and accused. The accusers, who were mostly women, were being sexist against other women that were being accused.

Rebecca was a 71-year-old woman, the wife of Francis Nurse who was a wealthy farmer and landlord in the Salem village, and had many children and grandchildren (Hill 87). She was very pious and everyone in the Salem village thought of her as an “exemplary piety” in the Puritan community (Linder). Rebecca had a very strong faith in God and told her friends on her sickbed that she recognized more God’s presence in her sickness than any other time in her life (Hill 88). Rebecca was a very respectable woman and supported by most of Salem villagers who believed in her innocence. After she was arrested and prosecuted because of the false accusations made by the “afflicted” women and girls’ against her, thirty-nine notable members of the community came forward, signed and submitted a petition to assure her innocence and piety (Hill 100).

In the Book The Crucible, author Arthur Miller, townspeople turned on each other for their own reasons. Some use it as revenge and others out of fear. Rebecca Nurse age 72 the wife of Mr. Nurse, is friends of most in the town and has no problems with any. She is a well respected and peaceful person who teaches us that integrity leads to more of a self-satisfied life.

There had been drama between the Nurse family and the Putnams, “… for years had been harassing the Putnam family by claiming that parts of their land laid on the topsoil rather than in Salem Village.

Amongst all those unjustly tried, the conviction that comes as a shock to both townspeople of Salem and readers alike is the conviction and consequential hanging of Rebecca Nurse. In the play The Crucible Rebecca Nurse is a noble woman who falls victim to the blame game that is the Salem Witch trials. She is Francis Nurse’s wife and well liked within the town until it was known at a witch could not be a witch if she were to blame someone else. Thus setting Rebecca up for doom when Mrs. Putnam’s children are unable to live long after birth and the only one falls ill soon after the accusement begins. As well as when Mr. Parris’ daughter Betty won’t wake up from a deep sleep. But Rebecca is too honest to “confess” to being a witch and saving herself.
