In the novel , Esperanza Rising, written by Pam Munoz Ryan , the reader meets a spoiled girl whose life went through many challenges. Throughout the novel Esperanza went from a spoiled brat to an anger frustrated girl and ended the story as a happy person. Esperanza thought her life was always going to be perfect, but it wasn’t how she expected. In the beginning , Esperanza was soiled girl that lives in Aguascalientes,Mexico. Esperanza was spoiled because her Papa was the owner of El Rancho de Las Rosas.
In Sandra Cisneros’, House on Mango Street, Esperanza’s yearning for freedom is supported in Darius & the Sky. Specifically, the vignette begins by saying, “you can never have too much sky” (33). Esperanza’s vision of the sky is symbolic of offering freedom and a realm filled with opportunity. Equally important, is the sky’s role in shaping Esperanza’s identity. At the beginning of the novel, Esperanza uses imagery to depict how she is “a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor” (9).
The vignette Born Bad, is important to Esperanza, because it talks about a moment that seemed to affect her a lot and has changed her. This is so, since she talks about how her aunt was nice and caring to them, but is still fragile after she was blind. This is shown when Esperanza kept describing the deteriorating conditions one after another, of her aunt 's apartment and how her aunt can 't do much at this point since she 's blind, and all the girls didn 't do anything to help but watch. This really affects Esperanza, since she jokes and mimics her aunt with her sisters, and now her aunt is dead she sees how she was rude and wasted the time she could have had with her aunt. During this whole Vignette it kept bringing up the fact that her
Esperanza feels sympathy for many people, and tries to help them as much as she
Still Esperanza does not get what is going on at this point. She is still so naïve and innocent. Sometimes the reader forgets how young she actually is because of the things she is going through at such a young age. Her mind and her decisions are moving at a faster pace, but she is still so blind to the world.
She dreams “One day I will pack my bags of books and paper. One day I will say goodbye to Mango. I am too strong for her to keep me here forever” (707). Esperanza believes that she can change the way she is living and live a better life. She is trying to get a good education to become a more improved and intelligent person so one day she does not have to be poor.
Everyone is affected by life’s circumstances. The responses to those experiences can have a positive or negative outcome in one’s future. In Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street, the protagonist, Esperanza, gives us her views on life, how she views herself, and she views her future. Not only does she give her perspective throughout the story, she tells us of the numerous experiences that she grows through. These experiences have an impact on her, creating new emotions and new adult like perspectives she has never faced before.
The male-dominated society that Esperanza grows up in forces the idea that women are weak and should stay locked in their houses while men go off to work. The men are immoral and seedy, as expressed in the chapter in which a homeless man leers and asks for a kiss from the little girls. Esperanza experiences the evil of her community when she is sexually assaulted, causing her to lose her previous desire to explore her sexuality. Before being assaulted, she wanted to be “beautiful and cruel” like her friend Sally, because Sally was what she understood to be a perfect woman. However, after her rape she decides that she needs to discover her own identity for herself.
Sexuality in adolescence Sexuality is the most notorious and common sign of development in adolescence. “The House on Mango street”, by Sandra Cisneros is a coming of age novel, where Esperanza transitions from a girl into a young teen. In her journey, Esperanza comes across many challenges, she is forced to grow up by life’s adversities. In the short story “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid, a mother advises her daughter and scolds her into becoming a decent woman. In her guidance, the mother is worried about her daughter’s sexual activity and warns her about the consequences of improper behavior.
Throughout The House on Mango Street, characters struggle to actualize their dreams of a meaningful life. Author Sandra Cisneros illustrates this theme through her inclusion of windows as a symbol for a longing of another life. In the novel The House on Mango Street, windows represent the book and it’s theme of struggling for satisfaction in life by acting both as a border to another life and a translucent gateway to the character’s hopes. Windows act as a border to the life the characters long for but are incapable of achieving. Esperanza tells her great-grandmother’s story in which she is whisked away from her previously eventful life only to “[look] out the window her whole life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow” because “she couldn’t be all the things she wanted to be” (Cisneros 11).
It can also be inferred that she is physically weak and malnourished. Finally, Esperanza will do anything to get what she wants. This means that she is extremely determined. Esperanza is a very timid little girl. After pestering her mother to give her a note to eat in the canteen, she is seemingly unable to answer the nun who asks what she is doing there, instead meekly holding up the note and scurrying upstairs to Sister Superior.
(54). Esperanza chooses to be alone over having to be around adults. Esperanza finally finds the courage to talk to a colleague at work when she meets a seemly friendly older man, and she is pleased to have an older friend to sit
Esperanza says that she will come back, she will come back for “the ones I left behind... the ones who cannot out”. (Cisneros 110). Esperanza is able to go through a change and accept who she is through her community and her family. She is able to use her situation to empower herself, and to be hopeful in her own
The reaction to this small house affects her to dream of living in a house of her own (Cisneros 4). Esperanza isn’t all that wealthy; this is evident when they can’t afford lunch meats so she makes a rice Maggard 3 sandwich (Cisneros 44). Overall Esperanza learns to cope with her living situation just talking to people and she also works really hard in school and at home and eventually moves away. These three characters have proved to all be very unique and different.
Esperanza thinks of herself as the ugly daughter who nobody comes to visit. Nenny has beautiful eyes and Esperanza thinks that beautiful people like Nenny can talk about leaving home all the time, because they are pretty and have fewer worries. Esperanza does not want to spend all her life waiting for a husband to come and take her away, nor does she want to be like Minerva‘s sister, is kicked out of her home because she has a baby. Despite her looks, Esperanza claims to have a new plan. She will not be one of the red lipped women in the movies who can play with men like toys.
