Reflective Paper
In my essay I will analyse and reflect on an intervention that happened while on my time at placement.
The intervention and background
The place I am on placement with is an organisation, which through a program called Therapeutic Recreation can help rebuild the lives of children and their families affected by a serious illness. Children and teenagers can be denied the ordinary experience and participation of growing up, but the psychological encouragement and support at this organization helps these children discover confidence, friendship and trust, enhance self-esteem and gain coping skills. Every activity in this organisation is based around TR and aimed at the development and growth of the child and not the end result. It’s aimed at getting the campers to move from their comfort zones to their stretch zones. The comfort zone is doing things you love to do and feel safe in the environment which you are doing these activities. The ‘stretch’ zone is where you feel like you are being challenged but are willing to try and able to cope with the surroundings and the challenged you are being faced. Everyone has his or her own stretch zones. There are four stages in TR. The first is challenge, programs are created with attention to things such as age of camper and the developmental level of the camper so that everyone can feel included and secure. It allows campers to get involved in new experiences that can develop to become life-long interests. The next step to TR is success. We can guarantee success by creating an environment that is positive, safe and supportive. Activities are adapted to everyone’s abilities so that all can be involved. There is no competition in here and no negative labeling. We would never compare successes with other campers, success has no size, no matter how small or big, they should all be praised. This is to remember each child that was lost. There was a circle of candle in the middle, each candle representing the lost child. Every family would then go up and light a candle and say their child’s name whom they are remembering. Throughout the weekend she became a lot more cooperative and began enjoying herself. Ella and I had formed a unique connection with each other and she began to trust me. On the last night, Ella bravely got up and lit the candle in the middle representing her sister.
