Students take AP exams to prove their knowledge of certain subjects. However, I am proud of my 4 on the AP World History exam because my success was not because of my knowledge, but my ingenuity. In my sophomore year, I didn’t want to take advanced classes like English 2A and World History AP. However, I ended up bored in my classes, especially in World History. In World History, I often finished the activities quickly, and then had nothing to do. Around the time the school was selling AP exams, I decided to read a book on my teacher’s shelf, a book the AP students were reading, Guns, Germs, and Steel. It was simply impossible to learn so much in so little time. But then I checked the scoring guidelines. As it turns out, the scoring guidelines for the World History exam are very strictly defined, with freedom only being given to the grader after the essay has scored 7/9 points. As long as you have what these guidelines ask for, you will get these points, even if your prose is bad, or your analysis is weak. Considering the average scores on the essays were less than two points, this was a pretty big deal. Because I had so little time, I decided to shift my efforts from memorizing history facts to getting every essay point I could. The document-based question was my main focus, because I could rely on the documents instead of my limited knowledge. If I was careful, I could ensure that I got at least 7/9 on it.
