A major purpose for me to participant in the placement is to acquire understand of a workplace environment and apply the learnings in the university to a real life setting. Before I start working in the agency, I outlined key learning objective as the following: apply knowledge learnt in the programme to practical work tasks in the organization; develop personal practice in terms of human services administration under the exposure to a real-life setting; gain work experience in the field of social policy and administration as a preparation for future career; and understand the workplace dynamics and enhance the skills and abilities for workplace communication. This has much helped to keep pace with the work schedule for school assignments while making a balance between job duties in NICEM. With this balance, I believe I can both learning from and contributing to the organization. I think I am doing my best to utilize this opportunity of offshore placement and learn as much as I can. In regards of the first assignment of organization analysis, I feel that I have quite a complete understanding on the work of NICEM under the help of orientation program and the meetings with supervisor. Other than basic orientation and supervision, having the opportunities to communicate with staff members and joining activities hosted by the agency are also important element that have allowed me to better observe and understand the daily operation of the organization. On top of the opportunities, writing the SWOT analysis is tool that have strengthened our understanding. Writing the analysis is a good chance to have a thorough reflection on the understanding of the organization that we will express what we have observed while uncovering what we do not understand. I was struggled to decide a suitable topic at first. However, I was then inspired by a story from Belonging Project when started working on it. Dure is a lady coming to Northern Ireland from Pakistan and used to be a doctor back in her home country. In her story, she mentioned that she finds it is hard to look for job in Northern Ireland and that after a year and half, she is still staying at home searching for job. I started to think what might be the barriers leading to her unemployment. I then noticed that there are many ethnic minority people who used to be a professional in their home country, but such qualifications are not officially recognized here or are hard to be re-qualified. I thereby decided to investigate on the institutional factors leading to the unemployment or underemployment of migrants in Northern Ireland. My upcoming task will then be to revise the study
