Reflective Essay: Gender Roles In Detroit Public Schools

Educational climates around the world are not all one in the same. In certain cultures, climates, cities, religions and societies education can either take on a necessary or unnecessary role. In some regions of the world, education can even vary depending on gender roles within the society a person inhabits. Schooling can range from being easily accessible to virtually all the citizens of a society, to not existing at all or not even being available to certain peoples under a specific socioeconomic level. For me, attending a university with a diverse student background, it is not difficult to find someone that has a culture that is not similar to my own. Every other year the Detroit Public Schools district would have an issue with funding, staffing, or some other aspect that affected the effective functioning of the schools. Having the same teacher all year was not something you could look forward to in most schools in the school district, or being enrolled in a class that had the necessary resources in order to properly instruct the students was not always promised. Overall, my schooling was not the best, but it also was not the worst. The high school that I had graduated from was ranked number two in the DPS school district, it was a virtually high quality high school compared to other high schools in our district. Throughout the entire three years that I attended this high school, I had the same teacher for the entire semester for any given course. Instructors at this institution were exceptional to the students, they made sure that each student reached his or her’s highest potential academically. Although we had exceptional staff at my high school, my high school was not as high quality as other school districts throughout Michigan. I believe that the reason that students and instructors in our school were as successful as they were was due to intrinsic motivation. The staff in our school mentioned, and occasionally. protested the fact that they were underpaid and their classrooms were understocked with vital resources to ensure the students had an optimal educational
