Reflective Essay: How My Writing Changes Throughout The Years

Throughout my eighth grade year, my writing has changed and improved in many ways. Before I took this class my writing could initially be described as ‘good enough’. It was not atrocious but was not sophisticated enough for high school. It had a number of problems including, but not limited to, sentence structure, clarity, and vocabulary. In previous years, I was not always focused or interested in what we were doing in my English class, so my writing suffered due to my un-interest in writing. In the present time, my writing has improved immensely because of a change in my mindset and the resources available to me throughout the year. My writing problems regarding my sentence structure and length were serious enough to become an issue in the clarity of the assignment I was writing. When writing, the sentences I had written would sound as if I were speaking them directly to the computer. When speaking, sentences are less complex and are of poor quality. The end product of my work would be less elaborate and unclear to the reader. In the present day, my writing is much more clear and easier to follow as well as more complex and sophisticated. It has changed and improved through all the practice that we have done this year. Of all of the assignments given, I particularly enjoyed writing the argumentative essays. I argued the standpoint that grades and exams should not be required in school. With the presence of grades and exams, it causes extraordinary stress on teens and their mental health declined overall. I believe that this year's writing assignment helped me work on my sentence structure and clarity. By having to explain my viewpoint on a specific topic, it aided me in elaborating more on my viewpoint and helped the reader understand it.
