I know VCOM is dedicated to creating an engaging learning environment to educate the next generation of doctors to provide care of the utmost quality. As someone who grew up in a medically-underserved county and desires to address the needs of my community, I can relate to the mission of VCOM to address the needs of medically-underserved populations When I shadowed Dr. Edwin Chan, we discussed potential research projects I could propose to the professors from the UF Department of Anthropology. We agreed I should propose research on the disparate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of color in Alachua County. While the project unfortunately fell through when returning to UF, addressing these disparities remained a forefront concern which I seek to pursue in the future. I anticipate that VCOM, with a commitment to health equity and addressing the needs of underserved communities, will provide me the opportunity to pursue research assessing disparities in healthcare.
Morehouse School of Medicine prides itself on improving the health and well being of people of color and those in underserved populations, which I believe is congruent with my aspirations. As a teen, I spent my first two years of high school living in Montego Bay, Jamaica. My experience as an underserved minority living in the Caribbean allowed me a direct view of the health care disparities in an underserved population and gave me the unique perspective into the needs of this cohort. After that time, I went on to attend an inner-city high school plagued by violence and drug abuse. During my senior year alone, I lost three of my classmates to gun violence.
The Bayou Region of Louisiana has seen a consistent increase of environmental disasters which have negatively impacted the physical, emotional, and financial well beings of residents in these parishes. Over the past decade, as a result of tragedies such as Hurricanes Gustav, Katrina, Rita and the BP oil spill. The Health Resource Services Administration defines medically underserved as having a physician shortage of primary care providers, high rates of infant deaths, high poverty or high elderly population. Despite the continual efforts to stabilize healthcare delivery in this region we have seen a significant increase in infectious diseases, chronic illnesses, mental health disorders and other healthcare disparities for minorities in this population. The majority of these patients are low-income, 65% are uninsured, 13% have Medicaid and 75 % are minorities inclusive of African Americans, Hispanic and others.
Growing up, I have had my fair share of medical encounters, and was even on state insurance for most of my life. This meant that exceptional care was not always in reach, as I had to visit overflowing medical facilities and was unable to choose the better treatment options due to finances. Due to this, I advocate for my patient’s daily at work by calling insurances and working out the logistics of getting them the care they need, or helping them find resources if we hit a dead-end. Putting their care first, each and every day, has helped me advocate for patients of all populations.
I have been working in the care industry for the past three years. During these three years I 've had the opportunity to work within different care settings, from the elderly, learning disability, challenging behaviours and supported live in to name a few. Throughout this period I managed to obtain countless caring skills working in a community and hospital setting. In addition to this, it also improved my ability to communicate and interact effectively with others in a friendly and professional way at the same time. I believe I have an authentic interest in all
My mother, a successful and well-known doctor who had a promising future in medicine, dangerously decided to leave everything behind, along with my father, and move to the country that promised the “American Dream.” Growing up in a Mexican environment proved tough at times, ranging from the hilarious abuelita cussing in Spanish to getting a beating by la chancla. My Hispanic mother, as tough and strict as she was, had the most
Healthcare disparity can be explained as the gap created in the delivery of healthcare to communities which causes some communities to receive better healthcare than others. Some factors that can cause these disparities include race, socioeconomic status, location, and gender. Because of health care disparities, there are a lot of patients who are and will be at risk for many diseases such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension. These disparities negatively affect the overall cost of delivering quality healthcare and are issues that must be addressed by the people who know them best, the health care workers. Through the NURSE Corps Program I hope to help address these imbalances in underserved communities in various ways.
I am an accelerated student at Mailman School of Public Health and the reason I would like to attend this lecture series is to enhance my understanding of the problems that are facing many developing countries. Since I will only be at Columbia for 1 year I would like to maximize my education and broaden my horizons by attending these lectures and hopefully I can share my own experience and struggles as well. Given my background as a recent medical school graduate and having lived both in Iran and Mexico I can bring my own experience of health system problems related to both countries and share some of these struggles with the group. My personal objective has always been working and serving the underserved population especially the Latino population
I then aspire to attend medical school, ultimately to practice medicine internationally with Doctors Without Borders. I would like to serve patients living in impoverished communities in either China or Francophone West Africa. My training in philosophy and French – including a study abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France – has well-equipped me for this future endeavor. By studying French, I have had the opportunity to build relationships with people who are different from me, thus transcending the barriers that can so often divide us,
My eyes automatically drifted to the tall bright palm tree that moved along with the rhythm of the wind. It’s leafs danced as they presented their welcome. The sun shined down and hugged me with warmth, giving my skin a tingling, but satisfying sensation. I had come from Virginia to California, the famous, constantly spoken of state, that finally reached my sight. The state presented its beautiful attributes to capture my wonder and mesmerization.
It is important to empathies with those patients, and search for the underlying cause of their anger in order to restore their spirit. Additionally, my personal values include showing compassionate care to all patients regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation. As a Christian, it is first and foremost my job to spread the world of Christ to those who do not know him. Therefore, I value the ability to speak to patients about Jesus in times of sickness and
Such disgrace has allowed for my persona as an intelligent, goal-oriented, and indeed hardworking Mexican-American to evolve. The idea of leaving for college, an idea I was never exposed to and always seemed too far fetched, thankfully has come to light through my dedication to pursue a medical degree. Not only do I want to change the perception of Mexican-Americans’ in this country, I will persevere in assisting those in war-torn countries. Unfortunately, thousands of people have no other option but death due to the lack of medical assistance. Pursuing the ultimate American Dream with the knowledge that many young children are denied the opportunity, for instance, my mother, cia, who due to the lack of resources failed to pursue a nursing degree, has encouraged many Latino-Americans.
My personal faith to the Catholic Church has deepened and is more present in each and every day. I hope to in the future be more involved with children and to be more involved with Mercy Care to help the community, as I found a very fulfilling experience and is something I would like to continue doing. I now a stronger desire to help the wider community and want to participate in further volunteer work. Volunteering at Mercy Care has been a wonderful experience and has given me so many valuable lessons and

This clinical experience has really helped me to sharpen my communication skills and realize just how important it is to understand mental health. We are told multiple times in class that mental health issues can be seen on any floor and that is the truth. I’ve seen patients in my older adult clinical on the pulmonary floor suffer from issues that range from anxiety to bipolar disorder and depression. Being able to understand how to approach people that suffer from these types of illnesses, allows us, the nurses, to give the patient the best care that we can. It helps to build a trusting relationship and get to know them on a personal level.
