I completed my service at Mercy Care in their Child care facility, located in Wembly. I participated in a variety of activities with the younger kids who ranged from 18 months to 2 years. We participated in many interactive games and activities with the kids and also helped put them to sleep during nap time. Some of the kids were more difficult to put to sleep then others, they required more care and calming techniques. Our aim was to lighten the workers load as the facility is understaffed. This effects the not only the workers but also the children as some may not get as much attention as others. I completed my service with Catherine Young (Cathy). The percentage of workers to children was very uneven as there is too many kids in each classroom compared to the quantity of staff in each room. Although the parents of the children’s did pay for their care Mercy care is not for profit and may not have the funding to hire more workers. Mercy Care, cares for all people no matter what race, religion or background they are from. The Mercy Care organisation stands by all of the catholic social justice teachings, however in the child care sector the social justice teachings consist of The common good and Solidarity. According to Caritas AU “Everyone belongs to one human family, regardless of their national, religious, ethnic, economic, political and ideological” this is the core idea behind solidarity. During my service I met so many different kids from a range of ethnic and religious backgrounds. The workers create an accepting environment for the children Mercy care enforces that differences between individuals is a good thing. Eg. There was one little girl, who was from a Buddhist background and her religion doesn’t allow her to eat meat, this meant that she could not eat what the others ate. My personal faith to the Catholic Church has deepened and is more present in each and every day. I hope to in the future be more involved with children and to be more involved with Mercy Care to help the community, as I found a very fulfilling experience and is something I would like to continue doing. I now a stronger desire to help the wider community and want to participate in further volunteer work. Volunteering at Mercy Care has been a wonderful experience and has given me so many valuable lessons and
