Although I entered this course with background information in psychology and a rudimentary knowledge of basic persuasive appeals, throughout this course, I significantly expanded my knowledge about various techniques and theories of persuasive communication. For instance, through the social judgement theory, I discovered that people compare new arguments to their attitudinal anchors and that it best to place persuasive messages on the boundary of their latitude of non-commitment and their latitude of acceptance in order for them to absorb the message’s content. Essentially, as a lawyer, my main role will be to persuade a judge or a jury in one way or another. By applying what I learned, will be able to produce more effective arguments and identify fallacies or manipulative techniques used by my opponents in court. Furthermore, the writing and speaking skills I developed, will be crucial for writing legal documents such as contracts and for delivering opening and closing arguments in front of the courtroom’s audience. For instance, from my group’s and my own research, I discovered that veterans, who I initially assumed were relatively well supported by the government, actually experience a variety of difficulties and negative conditions at higher rates than the citizen population. In addition, I learned about the magnitude of poverty and addiction within Ohio as well as serious national crises such as water crises and school shootings. Finally, I was informed about numerous non-profit organizations, which I was previously unaware about such as the Columbus Foundation and the Children’s Hunger alliance. As a result, I feel more inclined to contribute to these causes once I have the available time and
