Final Reflective Essay
While I have had prior experience in college writing, I was not sure what to expect from this course. I had never felt terrible at writing; however, I always took a long time to find a way to convey my thoughts onto paper. I used some skills I learned in high school to prepare for this course. For instance, I have picked up the ability to research information, collect data, and organize points effectively. However, I struggled to comprehend text, which translated into my writing methods. This made synthesizing communication difficult, which became more evident as I took this course.

Therefore I took the time to research our texts and converse with peers to expand my thinking. I often gave myself a week to complete each journal so that I could take time to process information. If there is one thing I have been able to take from this course is that it is right to utilize resources to enhance comprehension. When I worked on the sixth reading journal, I had a difficult time turning in the work I had done. After talking with my TA, I was unsure if I completely understood the main points and found that I needed to support my evidence better. Therefore I looked at my peer’s interpretations of the text and the lectures to help cultivate my ideas. I continued to do this for the rest of my reading journals, which helped me be concise and answer the questions well. I also utilized the Cornell-note taking method throughout my readings, which impacted my reading. It helped me by allowing me to focus on simple language and avoid unnecessary words to develop a clear writing style. Despite being able to handle myself well in group settings, I tend to get anxious about speaking in front of the class. However, the TA allowed room for students to interact with one another, which helped dissipate my discomfort. I had gotten close with one group member, and we would discuss our interpretations of the reading together. This helped heighten my understanding and help me feel more prepared for discussions. For instance, when answering the questions for reading journal eight, I discussed the analysis of the texts with a classmate, who helped me formulate an interpretation. This helped me organize how I would synthesize information briefly and concisely. In doing this, I found how much easier it was to interpret the text. This has pushed me to talk more in my other discussion courses, significantly changing my learning
