I relied on my history major a lot throughout my process of selecting material for my co-teaching experience. While attending Wabash College I gained deep knowledge of what students can and cannot do in all facets of history, and all of these experiences went into my decisions about teaching. When I thought about what reading assignments to assign during my class I relied on key aspects of the History department which are; to read through sources thoroughly, evaluate what you are reading, and try to implement the reading into works of your own. So, when I thought about assigning readings while I co-taught I wanted the material to be understandable to the students in the classroom. Although I wanted the material to be understandable, I wanted the students to be pushed to better themselves as I was in history classrooms at Wabash. A strategy that I would use would be a simple reading comprehension quiz. After working on reading skills, and how to read effectively, the students should have a strong understanding of how to read through material. The quiz will ask the student to read through a short historical passage and then answer a few short questions. The questions will be writing questions so the student can explain his/her point, this will also be beneficial because I will then be able to see what their thought process is while reading. The students will answer the questions on the quiz in complete sentences, and picking out information from the reading material that is applicable to the question. Not only does this for the students to show off their own strengths, it gives them a chance to control their own learning and what they believe is important to answer the question. This type of assessment will work well, I believe, because it gives the student a chance to evaluate the material that they read and explain in their own words as to why it answers the
