Different types of literature open new doors through which students’ can explore the unknown and expand their knowledge of controversial topics. The great examples found in literature have been the subject of much debate, as school boards wrestle with whether children should be allowed to read such difficult, harsh topics, as said in the article “How Banning Books Marginalizes Children” (Source F). There are so many brilliant works of literature spanning a wide variety of genres and topics, and a single school board should not determine what students learn. No one is proposing that second graders read The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, but rather that we intentionally choose literature that will expand, rather than limit, children’s options and minds. Not only do these great works lay the groundwork for our future generation, but they also serve to diversify students’ writing and analysis skills.
We learn how to read and write from books, we practice skills and teach ourselves from books. Not a year in my education has gone by without a book or several being part of the curriculum. In ninth grade I read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. The novel changed my view of the importance and need for books, because it showed the horror and devastation of a world without them.
They also gain an understanding of that period in time, how people were treated during that period in time and what went on during that period of time. When reading a novel it is more enjoyable to read than reading a factual report or article. It has been proven that if you find something enjoyable you learn and understand the topic better and in more detail compared to if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing. From my own experiences I can relate to the evidence.
They teach us compassion, new ways of thinking, and social skills. They also give us history and pieces of other’s minds. It gives a new point of view to be looking at and makes us more open-minded. Without books, we would be very narrow-minded and wouldn’t be able to problem solve as clearly. Reading also helps us improve our intelligence by showing us examples of vocabulary, life situations, and things in context.

In this compelling story, “the Odyssey,” I believe that it is an excellent choice for young ninth graders to read. Not only because of the choice of the school requirement but because it really has that impact of showing people how they prefer to see someone they’d admire but don’t really know them as they say. This story can also be vague but little by little it's understandable. Some of my reasons to this would be like our class for example, they would tell us to read certain parts and then we would discuss it and “graffiti” our packets of the reading and get to clarify the passage a bit more if some people were stuck and didn't understand it. We would also get in small groups to do small projects on what passage we’ve read and others would have different ones and we'd explain to them so we could all get the same meaning of the passage.
It also teaches you about commitment and how to build strong relationships. Entering high school, I had little time to read for pleasure. It seemed like I only had time to read what was required in classes. However, in English class, I realized I enjoyed reading coming-of-age novels. These kind of stories follows the growth of an individual from youth to adulthood.
Students can use books to grow their knowledge about our everyday day life. “It is important to help students see that everyone 's view counts” (Scales). By allowing students to see different points of views they’re able to experience situations unfamiliar to them and learn about different cultures and societies. If they don’t have the opportunity to read these books then they might miss out on these vital lessons. Children need to know about sensitive topics and strong ideas.
When kids read, they can sometimes lose them self in there head or in a train of thought. My first reason why kids should read historical documents, is that a lot happened in the past that changed how we live today. The thing with kids now is that they have all this technology at their fingertips, but take example in your parents teachers or even your grandparents they didn’t have as much technology as we did they didn’t have smart phones and laptops to look up stuff they had to pick up a book and get to reading if they wanted to find something out so they the only thing for them to really do was to read about the past and find out how the founding fathers got together and made this world work and how some of these important documents worked out and made this world the place it is today. And one of the big reason is that most kids find learning about history is boring and when they are told to read they either just skim though it and don’t lean nothing or they just zone out and not do it at all.

There is a dispute on whether the teachers or the students should select the books that will be read throughout the school year. Students should be able to choose all the books they want to read during the course of the school year. First, if students choose their books then, they will be in their comfort zone and will want to read. Another reason is students will choose books that interest them, and become more successful students. Therefore, the students will thoroughly read books which would help them understand the book better, and increase their grades.
The reasons are that it is through reading that a person is going to be able to discover new ideas, concepts, meet new places and people that time, money or reality sometimes prohibited. It develops your communication tools and expands you knowledge and the conception around you. First of all, reading gives you a wonderful opportunity to learn about other cultures and places of interest in the world. It gives you an insight into the diversity of our world and the chance to visualize it.
