Friendship George and Lennie have been best friends for a long time, but was George truly a good friend? Of Mice and Men is a book written by John Steinbeck. The two main characters had a close friendship throughout the book. Lennie had some autistic characteristics, and he had trouble learning and remembering things. George was very intelligent and was able to think quickly and clearly. No, George was not a good friend to Lennie because he used Lennie to his advantage, he got mad at Lennie and in the end, he killed Lennie. The first reason George was not a good friend was because he used Lennie to his advantage. Lennie was obsessed with soft rabbits. George used this to his advantage by telling Lennie that when they get a farm of their own, Lennie would be able to tend to the rabbits. George said that if Lennie were to get into any trouble he would not be able to tend to the rabbits. (17). George also used Lennie to get money because Lennie was such an exceptional worker. George was irritated at Lennie because he always forgot things. Lennie blanked on a large amount of things, but one important action he overlooked, was not talking to the boss. Lennie must do this so that the boss would not know how crass he is. When talking to the boss, Lennie panicked and let some words slip. (24). Another reason Lennie thinks George would get mad at him is because Lennie accidentally killed his pup. After he did, he was purely scared of the consequences George would give him. (pg. 85). This also happened when Lennie was touching the hair of Curley's wife. Lennie would not let go of her soft sausage curls, so she began to scream. Lennie got scared of how mad George would get. Furthermore, Lennie covered her mouth to mute her and he shook her. As a result, he accidentally killed her.
