They tried other means of trade, such as silkworm farming, and glassblowing, but it was far too cold for either. Jamestown’s saving grace came in the form of tobacco production found by John Rolfe. These tobacco plantations would be the center of the community in Jamestown.
Pilgrims landed in Jamestown in 1607 with aspirations to discover new land as well as to teach their religious beliefs. Jamestown was also viewed as major profit enterprise for food and material which could be sent back to the motherland, Britain. Upon their arrival, they discovered the land had already been occupied by Native Americans, which would allow for trade between the two settlements: Jamestown and Powhatan Confederacy. Tobacco also helped the growing of Jamestown not only in trade but in export which helped the prosperity of the new colony.
Wendy Warren, a historian who focuses on Colonial time, goes into depth about how the slave trade erupted in New England in her book New England Bound: Slavery and Colonization in Early America. She explains how African Americans were brought to America and how they were treated once they arrived. One recurring theme that circled around the Africans was economics. The slave trade market took off when companies wanted to invest in the Africans and the New World. Stock companies would be competitive towards who had the rights to certain slave groups as if it was a gigantic game of Monopoly.
Both New England and the Chesapeake region were colonized by people of English origin, however despite this they developed into two very distinct societies. This difference in development can be rooted back to the geographic features of the respective areas as well as the aspirations of the settlers. New England was primarily devoted to practicing Puritanism while the Chesapeake region was focused on financial gain from gold and, more significantly, tobacco. New England was mostly settled by people who were subjected to religious persecution for practicing English Reformed Protestantism, or more commonly known as Puritanism, in Catholic Europe. Which colony would be best to travel and live with? The Jamestown or Plymouth colony? These two seem completely different given some of the facts but do have certain things in common. The Infortunate is an autobiography written by an indentured servant named William Moraley. In his memoir, he talks about how he became an indentured servant, as well as some of the experiences he has encountered throughout his voyage into the New World. Through his words, readers are able to understand the hardships that indentured servants and slaves have gone through, and to capture what freedom is like for them during the 18th century. However, editors named Susan E. Klepp and Billy G. Smith were able to prove that Moraley has exaggerated several instances, which makes us question if his story is a valid primary source. This also makes us think about what could possibly be his intention in writing this memoir, or what he wanted people to take away from his story.
These colonies came across numerous hardships with war, famine, and political turmoil, in the 1600’s. These colonies worked for commercial purposes and neglected the need for relationship building with natives, safety, and resource gathering, so much so that they lost many early settlers. Working as an indentured servant was brutal in these colonies. Growing, storing, and packaging tobacco was very labor intensive work. Though indentured servants maintained contracts providing them with food, housing, and clothing, often times terms of service were lengthened.

For example, less than forty-eight hours after arriving at Fort Clatsop, Clark judged that the entire Clatsop people with whom the expedition traded “resembled the... [Chinooks] in every respect except that of stealing, which we have not c[a]ught them at as yet.” Frustrated that one Clatsop man did not accept his offering of valuable goods such as his watch and American money, Clark proceeded to generalize all Clatsops as stingy since they differed from his incoming hope that the people would defer to white interests out of respect. By the end of their stay, on Monday January 6th 1806, Lewis generalized that these three groups with whom the expedition traded “in common with other savage nations ma[d]e their women [and men] perform every species of domestic drudgery.” Echoing his colleague’s frustrations, Lewis complained that these peoples’ egalitarian economic practices did not match up with Anglo-American gendered divisions of labor, where men served as large-scale suppliers and producers of goods while women merely produced smaller quantities of goods of lesser importance to male leaders, and their unorthodox egalitarianism would complicate his trade goals.
In the beginning Jamestown,Virginia was a place settlers came to but ended up starving,the situation became so extreme the Virginia Company described it as: “one hungry man killed...and ate his wife (Shi and Tindall).” However, when it was reinvented Virginia changed to flourished new colony, where tobacco was discovered and was used in sales. The Virginia company decided that they would sell land to those who had money and would sell more to those who brought servants. So Jamestown was transformed into a tobacco growing region where people started to own their business and grow to be wealthy planters.

In 1607, the first wave of colonial settlers arrived in Virginia and began to establish Jamestown. Many of the new settlers came from wealthy families never performing a day of manual labor. Contracts of indentures were expiring and with much devastation in England, there was a shortage of English servants.

They had no families and no means of supporting themselves, which meant that they caused a potential problem to the political and economic challenge for stability. Since these men had no skills, they would become indentured servants, trading their labor for free passage to the colonies. Elite landowners used this unfree labor to their advantage by growing cash crops like tobacco and exporting their agricultural products, eventuating establishing Jamestown as a boomtown. Once the colony had become stabilized, the first representative legislature general assembly met in the Jamestown church in 1619.
