When thinking of their culture, people can have a challenging time understanding exactly what their culture is, and most of the time they have no idea how much their culture impacts how they perceive the world. Culture is a huge part of the way people perceive the world because everyone has a different culture (slightly or majorly), so everyone sees the world differently. The two main parts that affect how people perceive the world are relationships and beliefs.
The relationships that people have with their family and friends around them will change how they see the world over time because they become a little bit more like the people around them. One of the most important people that affects perception of the world is a spouse, which is exactly what happened to Frida Kahlo, “The bed was bedecked as she liked it, with photographs of her husband, the great muralist Diego Rivera,” (Herrera 33). It is shown in this quote that her husband influenced her work and meant so much to her, and that she more than likely influenced his art style in certain ways as well. In the story “Two Kinds” the mother has very high expectations of her daughter, in the beginning the daughter had as high hopes as the mom, but they started to fade fast as her beliefs changed to the point when she said “But sometimes the prodigy inside me became impatient. ‘If you don’t hurry up and get me out of here, I’m disappearing for good,’ it warned. ‘And then you’ll always be nothing.” (Tan 22) The daughter is slowly starting to stop believing in herself which is affecting the way she sees the world around her, so that she thinks that she is incapable of every being anything but
