What is geography? According to the book, it is exploring different dimensions in a region; it is more than a factual listing including countries, capitals, cities, etc. In geography, focusing more on human geography, there are many themes that consist of many concepts. Let’s focus on culture. Culture is a set of learned beliefs, practices and values that serves to shape individuals and collective behaviors. There are so many things that influence somebody's culture. Let’s start off with Language. Using the book's definition, “language is a system of communication based on symbols that have agreed-upon meanings.” (100). Something that I found really interesting in the reading was finding out that there are thousands of languages in the world. A little over 6,900 to be more specific. That blows my mind because I am aware that there are different cultures therefore it makes sense to have many languages, but personally being surrounded by only a few languages, it makes it mind boggling. (132) There are many types of religions, such as monotheistic, polytheistic, and atheistic, which all influence one’s culture. One way that it could would be that some certain religions have certain rituals that influence the way people act and behave. Personally, I grew up catholic so I had a set of beliefs, and I went to school with people who were apostolic and they had their set of beliefs. We had various differences.
