This week’s reading was about the Renaissance period. The Renaissance is associated with Italy, also countries like Germany, England, and France had the same cultural changes. The “rebirth” is from “Renaissance”, a French term. During this period it was sought upon to revitalize culture by re-emphasizing classical texts and philosophies. This resulted in an expansion in creating a style of art, philosophy, and scientific inquiries. Some of the major developments were astronomy, humanist philosophy, the printing press, vernacular language in writing, painting, and sculpture technique, world exploration, and Shakespeare’s work. In these piece of art, there is a demonstration of an orrery, a mechanical model of the solar system used to demonstrate motions of the planets around the sun. The center of the orrery is a gas light, representing the sun. The arcs represent orbits of the planets. The faces of the figures create a narrative. This painting by Wright invented a new subject and scenes of experiments and new machinery along with the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution. Wright had a fascination with light, strange shadows, and darkness, revealing the influence of Baroque art (Rococo Baroque to Neoclassical art in Europe, n.d).
In Conclusion, Renaissance changed the world through the transition from the ancient to the modern and provided the birth of the Age of Enlightenment according to Abernethy. This period had many developments in science, art, philosophy, trade and technological advancements such as the printing press mentioned earlier.
