The epic”Beowulf” from the oral tradition is a long narrative poem about an epic hero who is legendary, warrior, and savior. Beowulf is about a bloodthirsty monster named Grendel. Beowulf,our epic hero, travels across the sea on a quest to defeat Grendel. His battle with Grendel led him to battle more monsters until his death ended his triumph. People appreciated his success and were willing to save others while putting them before himself. A hero is someone who is legendary and willing to sacrifice themselves for others’ safety and well-being. A hero can be a simple man or woman, or a king, queen or knight. There are so many ways on how to define a hero, such as for Beowulf when he is calm and expecting any fate that comes for him. Beowulf is a legendary way of being able to stay calm and expect any fate whether it be his death or victory. He “Strode calmly, confidently” (647-650) as he went to fight the dragon. Beowulf being able to remain calm and attentive throughout his fight is what defines him as a hero. A hero is characterized as a warrior who by their accomplishments and wins make him a hero. Beowulf's acts of being a warrior have been able to define him as one such as when he defeated Grendel and “ ended the grief,the sorrow, the suffering forced on Hrothgars’s helpless people by a bloodthirsty fiend”402-405). The Geats viewed him as a warrior and “ thanked God that their leader had come back unharmed;” (597) after the battle with Grendel's mother. His wins and achievements are what have made him a hero. Being legendary and a warrior is what defines Beowulf as a hero. With him being legendary and a warrior, it helped him succeed in his quests and battles and being successful in his triumphs.
