Some people think that the heroes always have super powers and are usually men. This statement is not always true. Heroes can come in all shapes and sizes, plus they are willing to do many things. A hero is a willing sacrifice themselves for the greater good; they are people who are brave in the face of danger, and heroes are not always men, but men and women can be both the heroic figures.
Heroes are willing to give up their life for another’s needs. An example of someone sacrificing themselves for others is Magnus Chase from The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. Magnus was told in the afterlife, “You sacrificed yourself to save a lot of people.”(pg. 75). Magnus fought a fire giant on a bridge to give the people time to escape, and in the process he died. An example of being brave is Welles Crowther from “The Red Bandana”. On 9/11 2001 Welles became a hero. Wells was on the top floor of the south tower after the plane had hit he found an exit and lead a group of people down the stair. Then he went back up and looked for more people, and he took the second group down. He went back up for the last and did not come back down. Welles died after helping many people escape out of the south world trade center. This example of Welles shows bravery because Welles risked everything he had for others and went back up the stairs not knowing when the tower would fall. Another example of bravery in danger is Abraham Lincoln in the “White House Funeral Sermon for Abraham Lincoln” by Dr. Phineas D. Gurly. Gurly said this about Lincoln, “He is dead; but the memory of his virtues of his wise and patriotic counsels and labors, of his calm and steady faith in God lives, is precious and will be power for good in the country quite down to the end of time.” This quote shows that Lincoln was brave and honored because he did not give up.
