The Casey Anthony Trial In today’s society it is very hard to lead a private life when we live in a world where news is quickly and easily made accessible for the world to see with the constant advancement in technology through the use of cameras, smartphones, the internet and also an increasing media influence to ensure that no is safe from public scrutiny. The Casey Anthony Trial is an example of a recent controversial murder case that received such public scrutiny. It seems everyone has their opinion of the trial, whether they believe Casey is innocent or she is guilty, but come July 2008, the world knew who Casey Anthony was and there was no going back for Casey. The textbook would refer to this case as a level one or celebrated case in terms of wedding cake justice because of the amount of publicity it received (Siegel, 2011, p. 19). The media painted Casey as a heartless monster. News reports plastered TVs and the internet with videos and pictures of Casey partying shortly after Caylee’s disappearance and getting tattoos, appearing unaffected and unconcerned with her daughter’s whereabouts and well-being and even laughing at her murder trial, which made her seem even more unsympathetic and immature. Even after Casey was acquitted at the trial there was an ABC article written by C. Smith (2011) that ran the story that Casey did not show up at her daughter’s memorial on the anniversary of her death alongside her parents, again attacking Casey’s moral character. The media, while not always the best and most reliable way to get information was able to pick and choose what information they wanted to disclose to the public because they do not have to prove to anyone that Casey is guilty, they can just let the photos and videos speak for themselves. People are very easily influenced by what they see and are quick to pass judgment on people without necessarily having all of the facts, and for the Casey Anthony case, I strongly believe the media did an excellent job of painting Casey Anthony as a cold-hearted killer, even if the jury did not convict Casey. The damage the media has done to Casey will follow her for the rest of her life, which is something that not even a not-guilty verdict can save her
