Dante Alighieri is one of the most influential poets during the renaissance era. Whenever you think about hell or heaven then you’re thinking about the vision that Dante created. Dante was an Italian poet but also produced Latin poetry, he was exiled from Florence for exiling other rivals. Dante published 23 poems and died September 1321 at age 56. Dante was born between May 21–June 20, 1265, his family had a history in the Florentine politics. He started to do poetry in his teen years, during this time he was supposed to be engaged with Gemma di Manetto Donati but was in love with Beatrice Portinari. Shortly after Beatrice died Dante studied the philosophy of Florence and its politics, he mentioned Beatrice in most of his poems but never mentioned Gemma in his poems. For example, he used Buondelmonte’s funeral in canto 16 of paradiso which was one historical event of a love triangle. A historical figure for Dante was Brunetto Latini, he was exiled from France and moved to Florence where he became popular from his “Tesoretto.” Guido Cavalcante was the first friend Dante had, but he soon thought that he was superior to Cavalcante and had him exiled from Florence and soon contracted malaria. Dante dedicated one of his books to Cavalcante titled “La Vita Nouva” (The new life). The last major important historical even was the two factions that fought against each other, Ghibellines supported the emperor Guelf supported the pope. The Ghibelline’s emblem was a white lily with a red field and the Guelf had the colors switched. Many people from these factions were represented into Dantes poems like the Boundelmonte.
