BANG! The whole universe destroyed. DC Comics Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is the wielder of the universe's most powerful weapon. The catch is–the one who wields the ring must have conquered his fears, and Hal fears most everything. Hal Jordan, born in Coast City, was a child to Martin Jordan and Jessica Jordan, and the middle child of three with older brother Jack and a younger brother Jim. As a young child, he idolized his father, a test pilot who worked for Ferris Aircraft. While his father was working, Hal witnessed his father die from a tragic plane crash. From that point on Hal had fear. Carrying this newly developed fear throughout his whole life–going on to become a reckless stunt pilot. That is until he becomes a green lantern. Some shaping events in Hal’s life include Hal witnessing his nightmare just as a young boy: his pilot father dying in a tragic plane crash. Hal was greatly affected by this causing him to become reckless and defiant. Studies show when something this tragic happens, the younger a child was at the time of the loss, the more likely they are to develop mental health problems, including anxiety, mood, or substance abuse issues. In Hal Jordan’s case, he would have ended up like this, but through will power he has overcome the death of his father. The power of will is used in real life occurrences as well.
