The Thanksgiving Story
The American Thanksgiving event has been in existance for more than three centuries now. The event was first organized by a group of religious leaders who had traveled from Plymouth, England in such of a free land where they could worship freely. During winter, many colonists on board lost their lives due to the outbreak of strange illnesses. Half of the crew survived to see the spring. The team that survived were warmly welcomed and taught how to practice farming natives led by a former slave, Squanto. The pilgrim's first corn harvest of 1621, was very successful and the by then Governor William Bradford organized a ceremonious feast. The carving of the turkey, watching football and saying grace are just but a few of American Thanksgiving holiday values. Other values include telling a story of past Thanksgiving disasters. During such occasions, the American passion for pets is observed. Every household offers their pets with delicious food and photos are taken. Dining with the less fortunate is another outstanding value practiced during the ceremony. Lastly, after everyone both rich and poor have dinner together, people watch football at night with the youth receiving sensible and most helpful advice from elderly people. Both the Puritans and Separatists brought with them the tradition of holidays. These included days of fasting during pivotal or challenging moments and days of celebration and feasting to thank the Almighty following seasons of abundance. The concept of Thanksgiving is termed as 'ethnic identity origin myth' because its origin is traced to many regions such as native America, Greece, Egypt, Italy (Romans) and Britain. The ceremony is considered a myth when one believes it to have originally started in America (Reese 2013).
