Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy “Sometimes it takes the pain of a deployment to realize how we take the little things for granted and how much we miss them”. Maestro by Peter Goldsworthy, though absurd in its opening pages, this novel certainly fills readers with a longing by the end of the book. Maestro (1989) is a coming of age novel that deals with the issues of childhood expectations and entitlement, and the eventual disillusionment upon reaching adulthood. The protagonist of the novel Paul Crabbe, the arrogant, impertinent and at times insufferable fifteen years old boy, dreams of a life of fame and eisteddfod glory, however eventually succumbs to second-rate performances. Likewise, his enigmatic piano teacher, and the novel’s namesake,

In his novel Whistling Vivaldi, Claude Steele proposes that when we internalize the prejudices others have of us, we start to act on these prejudices. The most striking example of this was demonstrated in a study that examined the performance of women on a math test. Before taking the test, one control group acknowledged their femaleness by filling in the gender box that is ubiquitous on nearly all standardized tests, while the other control group did not. Surprisingly, the first control group, which acknowledged their gender, did noticeably worse on the test than the second group, which did not, suggesting that self-held prejudices of our own gender can affect our performance and alter the decisions that we make. There are many differences and similarities between the fourth movement of Beethven’s Fifth symphony and the fourth movement of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, whether it is the orchestrastion of the pieces, the dynamics, form and period. Ludwig van Beethoven is one of the most well known Classical composers in music history, born into a family of musicians and was seen by his father as a profitable prodigy and had several of his piano compositions published by the age of twelve. He was the first successful freelance composer and changed the way music was composed and performed as he composed pieces that defied the standard ways of composing during the Classical era by using an expanded form structure, larger orchestra, dramatic themes and replaced minuet and trio with scherzo and trio making the third movements of his symphonies faster than traditionally performed. He also treated instruments as individuals instead of grouping them together such as the bass instruments which originally formed the Basso continuo. Beethoven experimented with the ways an instrument could be played , creating new sounds, and would have large pitch ranges between instruments which aided in the expressiveness and drama of his pieces.
