The Raven Speaks Nevermore Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7, 1849 as a result of Alcohol poisoning. Many will be startled by this news, but few will grieve for him as not many of his friends or relatives were alive at the time of his death. As an infant, his mother fell ill and died of tuberculosis and his father abandoned him. He was raised by a successful tobacco merchant, who later sent him away to the University of Virginia. At age 26, he married his 13 year old cousin Virginia Clemm, who would fall ill and die of tuberculosis ten years, an event which would inspire his greatest work; The Raven.
