When Poe said nevermore was he lying? Edgar Allan Poe, a famous poet, headed out to New York but never made it. Poe passed on October 7, 1849. Although some believe Poe died of rabies, the symptoms, lack of evidence, and the accounts from many people contribute to the belief of Poe dying from alcohol. Many people gave accounts of Poe’s actions during his last few days. In the text, it said, “Poe looked to Walker like he was flooded with drink,” which was in “Poe’s Final Days.” In “Poe’s Death Is Rewritten As Case Of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol” it explained, “The researcher, Dr. R. Michael Benitez, a cardiologist who practices a block from Poe’s grave, says it is true that the writer was seen in a bar on Lombard Street in October 1849, delirious …show more content…

In the article “Poe’s Final Days'' it stated,” Dr. Moran’s description of his sweating, shaking, and hallucinations show that alcohol may have caused his death.” Also in “Poe’s Death Is Rewritten as Case of Rabies, Not Telltale Alcohol” it says, “by the next day was perspiring heavily hallucinating, and shouting at imaginary companions. The next day, he seemed better but could not remember falling ill.” Additionally in “If Only Poe Had Succeeded When He said Nevermore to drink” it said, “In those days, rabies was well known as to causes and symptoms, including itching and other sensations that could affect an entire limb or side of the body. How could Moran and his staff ignore such symptoms in a patient?” All these prove that with all the symptoms it is alcohol that caused Poe’s death because of so many clear alcohol symptoms it would be untrue to say that something else caused his death so with all this proof you could say Poe died of Alcohol. In “Rabies Death Theory” R. Michael Benitez says, “I was saddened to hear the fate of Caterina, Poe’s cat, yet nowhere have I suggested that Poe contracted rabies from her.” This also explains that a medical professional didn’t think he contracted Rabies from his cat which leads you to think where else would he get it because the most likely way Poe could’ve got rabies was his cat but that's out of the question so it really wouldn’t make sense for Poe to have …show more content…

In the text, it said, “He talked constantly, Dr.Moran said, to make-believe objects on the walls.” Also in another article, it stated, “Poe refused alcohol and could drink water with great difficulty. Rabies victims frequently exhibit hydrophobia, or fear of water, because it is painful to swallow.” These prove there are many symptoms Poe had that are like rabies symptoms. In addition, it said Dr. Benitez, a medical professional, believed he died of rabies. Then in “Rabies death Theory” it says, “Thus the lack of evidence of a bite or scratch is not inconsistent with the diagnosis.” These also explain that it’s probable that Poe died of Rabies because he acted and was likely to have it so it might have caused his death. I can see why someone would think Poe died of Rabies. But with lack of evidence, it proves that he didn’t pass for that reason. In the passage, it stated, “no evidence exists about what was happening in his life.” Also, another article stated, “There is no evidence that a rabid animal had bitten Poe.” Then in another story, it said, “Dr. Benitez admits the Primary weakness of his theory- lack of evidence of a bite or scratch.” Finally again in “Rabies death Theory” it explained, “I was saddened to hear of the fate of Caterina, Poe’s cat, yet nowhere have I suggested that Poe contracted rabies from her.” These prove that there is just so much evidence missing for the theory of his death being from rabies because there
