Hook: “Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast” (Shakespeare 2.4.101). When life is moving too quickly, people often stumble through their decisions and experiences when they should be taking things slow.
Background Info: William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, takes place in Verona, Italy in the 14th century. In this tragic comedy, there are two families, the Montagues and the Capulets, that have always had a hateful rivalry. Despite this, young lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet fall in love at first sight and choose the hide it from their feuding parents. Context: Romeo is completely in love with Rosaline, but she does not love him back. To heal his broken heart, Romeo attends the Capulet party with his friends, where he meets Juliet. Romeo falls in love at first sight with Juliet and forgets all about Rosaline.

Also, Romeo falls in love with Juliet at first sight because he thinks she is beautiful, which means his love for Juliet mainly lies in his eyes. The accelerated time scheme throughout the play highlights Romeo’s fleeting and inconstant love.
Context: When Romeo meets Juliet, he tells her he loves her almost instantly, moving on from Rosaline, whom he claimed he was in love with earlier that day.
Evidence: Knowing that love can change, Juliet tells Romeo to “...swear not by the moon, th’ inconstant moon,/ That monthly changes in her circle orb,/ Lest that thy love prove likewise variable” (Shakespeare 2.2.114-116).
Explanation: Romeo changes his feelings the same way that the moon changes its phases. Therefore, Juliet does not want Romeo to stop loving her, so she tells him not to swear his love for her by the moon. By moving too hurriedly with his relationships, Romeo makes poor choices that have negative impacts which ultimately lead to his and Juliet’s deaths.
