“Young men’s love lies, not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes”. This quote by Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet is perhaps one of the best pieces of evidence from the play that their relationship is a form of lust. The difference between love and lust is sometimes difficult to see, but if you look closer Romeo and Juliet's story is a tale of lust and woe. While “love at first sight is possible”, it is not possible for these characters to fall in love so quickly, because they only knew each other for a day, you need to have a close relationship before love is developed, and love is more than just physical contact it takes time and patience. I believe that in a way this could be because of his personality as it seems, he goes from girl to girl, just hoping to find one that fills his “desires”, and with that we see another example of the lust that is hidden in between the so called romance and tragedy of this play. Shortly after Romeo declares his love for Rosaline and is subsequently shot down he goes into a very depressive state. A few hours later Mercutio and a few of Romeo’s other accomplices try to get him to go to a party hosted by The Capulets, pretty much to meet girls to get him out of his depression. Soon after he enters the party he lays eyes on who he calls “the prettiest girl he ever lay eyes upon.” despite claiming to love Rosaline only hours before!
