According to the Oxford dictionary, a gadfly is a fly that bites and agitates livestock. In Plato’s Apology, it is claimed that Socrates compares himself to a gadfly that is attached to the city of Athens (29e). Then, in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. mentions Socrates in his letter to the clergymen and compares himself to Socrates claiming, “so must we see the need for nonviolent gadflies to create the kind of tension in society…” (89-90). In both passages, there is an importance to be a gadfly in society and by being a gadfly, both men are able to create a change in their societies.
Well I 'm sorry for the misunderstanding. Me too. Good. Let 's just take you back and you can come again another time.”
I am writing this letter because I understand that I have failed MATH 1B leaving me with 85 quarter units. First of all I would like to thank you and the school for even giving me the opportunity to explain my situation and hopefully give me a second chance at admissions. During winter quarter 2017 I took Math 1B with professor Farshod Mosh at De Anza College and the first couple of weeks it was like a typical class although he was very strict. Later on during the course I have come to learn that this teacher is extremely racist towards chinese people and racist towards males, which I happen to be both. I took his comments about chinese people to heart and made me scared to seek him for help during office hours and it just affected me emotionally.
In this paper I will examine why Socrates did not attempt to appease the jury in his Apology. Socrates is put on trial for corrupting the youth and believing in gods other than the gods of the city. I believe he chose not to appease the jury for three reasons: he is a man of pride, he does not fear death and additionally finds it shameful to fear death. Socrates is a man of pride.
As I look back and reflect, I see how hurtful those words sounded. It is my hope that my sincere apology will be
Mr. Higgins, First I want to thank you and the rest of the staff for organizing the intervention this morning. I was reflecting back on my time at Brophy after the meeting and recognize that I have received many opportunities that most student can not receive in public high school. If I had a chance to redo my four years of high school I would definitely still pick Brophy. Even though my high school career at Brophy could have been better, none of the moments I have had (good or bad) has been a waste. Brophy has dramatically changed my life farther than any school could have and changed the way I think and carry myself between freshman year and now.
A: III. The Apology of Plato: what was Socrates saying? A comparison and contrast of the rhetorical strategy of Socrates in FS 11, Plato’s Apology to the rhetorical strategy of the speaker in the Athenian law court speech you read for your report. Find all you can that is unconventional and counter conventional in what Socrates says.
First off, I know you will never essentially receive this letter I just thought it would help me get my feelings out and tell my story. So, here it goes. I’m so sorry, for everything. I killed you. I killed you!
Hindsight looking back I understand that what I did was wrong and outside the scope of my job and I sincerely
Plato’s The Apology is a unique work that looks at the speech that Socrates made in a trial in his defense for not recognizing the gods. The paradoxical thing in this speech is that it is anything but an apology, but rather a clear defense that is present and steadfast in his position. The manner in which he was sentenced, seemed very harsh and is something that I would have not done. I would not convict Socrates of the crime because as he stated in the work, attempting to silence him causes more harm to those that engaged in the conviction rather than the harm it caused to himself. This quote by Socrates suggested that one must deal with processes in a logical manner, rather than just convicting someone to a death sentence.
The teachers were happy to see that you enjoyed eating with the children and you have very good self-help skill. You liked playing in the sandpit, side by side with the children, as you dug the sand. You are enjoying yourself so much that you become a bit upset when it is time to say good-bye as you want to stay here with the children and teachers. We believe that you will build good
Despite the title of this historical piece of work, this speech, made by Socrates at his trial, was anything but an apology. Plato, who wrote Apology, was a student of Socrates and this is his account of the trial. Even though he was present at the trial, the colloquy may have been adjusted by Plato to reflect what he thought Socrates should have said or what he thought Socrates meant to say. Plato was very fond of Socrates, therefore the way he may present him can be bias. Socrates attempted to persuade the men of Athens of his innocence by presenting himself as a good man and an authority of knowledge, as declared by the Delphic oracle.
Apologies if my assumption of prefix is incorrect. Personally I believe it to accurately portray my reasoning for this email. I can only estimate the number of students you have taught over the course of your career; therefore it is inconsequential that my name hold any meaning. Formalities aside, Thank you. Thank you for the bizarre, unforgettable learning experience.
Socrates was a great philosopher of the Greek world. He was quite an atypical and distinctive person. Being different from all the other philosophers of the land, Socrates was teaching his students ideas totally out of the ordinary from what the society believed was right. As a result, he displeased many people so much that they decided to get rid of him. Socrates was put to trial, accused of spoiling the youth of Athens, tried and sentenced to death.
I am writing this letter to express my most sincere apology on my poor academic performance. I want to explain the reasons that have contributed to the decline of my GPA. I have been struggling with a mental health condition that has prevented my ability to perform at my best. I ask you to please understand my situation and hereby forgive me for my poor grades. I completed high school in Honduras, where I was reared.
