In the study, Effects of aerobic and/or resistance training on the body mass and fat mass in overweight or obese adults by Willis, Bateman, Shields, Piner, Bales, and Kraus, the study discusses how efficient aerobic training, resistance training, and a combination of the two effects weight loss (2012). In the end, the study found that different training strategies have different effects on the body and had different conclusions for each of the training methods. Authors wanted to conduct this study because there has been little research done on resistance training and how it affects fat loss and overall weight loss. The purpose of the run-in period was to figure out which participants truly wanted to be in the study. This helped the study because the researchers were able to weed out the unwanted participants and overall saving money on the study itself. The only negative about this four-month run in period was that the researchers only measured the participants at the four-month mark and not at the beginning of the study. This impacts the results because there could have been a possibility that some of the participants could have already started an exercise regimen and a diet plan, which can skew the research results. The participants were also subject to randomization. This meant that the participants could not choose what type of exercise they wanted to do. The researchers only required that they have a three-day food diary what the ate in the past 24 hours. The researchers did not take into consideration that the subjects could have lied in their food diary and how many calories they truly consumed. This variable of the study was not controlled and is very concerning because nutrition plays a major factor in weight loss and impacts whether the participants gained or lost weight and
