Dog breeds, what are they? Defined by the American Kennel Club Association or the AKCA a dog breed is a domestic race of dogs (selected and maintained by man) with a common gene pool and characterized appearance and function. So what does that really mean? Breeds of animals is actually a very hard definition to deter, but a common definition easy for us to understand is that a breed of dogs is when a dog looks like another in some cases how when we see a chihuahua we automatically call it a chihuahua without actually finding out. Is pre-determining a breed by looks bad after all? Should we get to keep our pits as family dogs? In America, Pit bulls make up 6 percent of the dog population in Canada and the US in 2016. Why is it that dogs are pre-determined to be aggressive due to their looks? Is it because of what they where breed for previously in the past? Does a pervious breed reason for a dog to be pre-eliminated even from military bases? Dog 's are often breed for certain reasons. Some of the reasons Golden Retrievers are breed to be service dogs are because "Goldens have wonderful temperaments. They are easy to train and gentle with children. They are also reliable, hard workers, in demand as both assistance and search and rescue dogs. (Becker)". But even Retrievers weren 't always breed to be service reliant. in fact retrievers were once bred to be hunting dogs. Does their past create a current day problem for them today? Golden retrievers are considered easy t train and have a great temperament which allows them to be thought of as great service dogs. But with a fighting past, pits are still considered aggressive terroists. Many breeds are now brought up different, and used for other purposes then what they were once found to be used for in the first place. Pit-Terriers in general were trained as fighters back in the 1800 's in England as Bull Baiters. Bull baiting back then was held as entertainment for even the struggling classes and as a relief for many stresses. Partially because of these early breeding efforts which frowned on "man biters," pit bulls gained a reputation for their trustworthy nature with humans.
