The theme of revenge has been displayed in numerous ways through many works of literature over the centuries. This is exemplified throughout the horror novel Frankenstein as the creature speaks of wanting revenge on Victor for abandoning him and then killing his brother, as well as Victor wanting revenge on the creature for the murder of his family and friends by shooting at him and vowing revenge, and finally, for the creature wanting revenge on victor for breaking his promise by destroying the female creature and murdering Victor’s wife Elizabeth. Throughout the novel, Mary Shelley demonstrates revenge through the fierce conflict between Victor and his monstrous creation. Through the flesh and blood of Frankenstein’s being torn away, to the only sense of companionship for the lonely creature, ripped away from him before he obtained it. The monster kills Elizabeth on the wedding night of Victor’s, Victor, in agony attempts to kill the monster to avenge his newlywed wife. “While I still hung over her in agony of despair, I happened to look up… I saw at the open window a figure the most hideous and abhorred. A grin was on the face of the monster; he seemed to jeer, as with his fiendish finger he pointed towards the window, and drawing a pistol from my bosom, fired; but he eluded me...” (Shelley, 212). Victor is broken at the death of his dear wife, in the window of the room he spots the monster, enraged and driven by a vengeant force, victor unholsters his pistol and fires at the creature.
