“Social Media, the Real Thief” Social media is one of the most entertaining and thrilling ways to interact with others and express oneself, that is until the person finds himself physically incapable to remove his attention from Facebook. For every minute that someone spends on social media, they are putting themselves one scroll closer to its unforgiving grip. Engaging in social media presents the negative possibilities of manipulation, poor quality of life, and lack of validation. Therefore, social media is a corrupt form of interaction.
Have you ever felt manipulated, perhaps as a child, when your parents had control over what TV shows you watched or who your friends were? The word manipulation is defined by the Webster dictionary as “to change by artful or unfair means to serve one’s purpose”. They say people are now able to communicate with the loved ones in different countries because of Facebook, or now they can interact with celebrities and see all their pictures on Instagram. Yes, social media most certainly has had a very positive impact in making it easier for us to communicate with those not in our presence. However, as social media has made it easier to communicate with those not in person, we are starting to forget how to communicate with people in person. What eventually results from this is that we would rather talk to someone in the virtual world rather than in person. An article from USA Today states “A study conducted for online casino Yazino found that one in four people spend more time socializing online, via sites such as Facebook and Twitter, than they do in person”. Social media is corrupt because while connecting us, it has disconnected us by attaching and absorbing our society in social media, rather than reality
