In the discussions of language, one controversial issue has been what language is correct and acceptable. Grambs argues the usage of the word like. Others believe that the usage of the word like in speech is okay. My own view is there are certain times when using the word like is acceptable. When it comes to the topic of the word like, most of us will readily agree that it seems difficult to talk without using the word. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of if using the word like makes us lazy people? While some are convinced that it does, others believe that it is easier to convey ideas and talk to people while using the word like. They are teaching the students to understand both languages so they will be able to understand both black and white American English. Knowing two languages doesn’t always mean that it is two completely different languages. It means knowing two different dialects in the same language. According to Steve Harvey, “You do have to be bilingual in this country, which means you can be very adept at slang, but you also have to be adept at getting through the job interview” (MacNeil, 183). Black English isn’t just used by the black race. White people tend to start speaking black English as well. Labov maintains that women are, “the primary transmitters of language” (MacNeil, 184). Basically, what Labov is saying is that women talk to each other far more than men do. Labov believes that women are more skilled in making a new language come about and it be acceptable.
