Ew!” presents why eating insects should be considered in the United States and why these certain foods disgust us. In the article “Would You Eat This?”, author Kristin Lewis describes why eating insects is uncommon in the United States. To begin with, Lewis claims “When hunter-gatherers first arrived in Northern Europe, the land was mostly frozen and there were few insects available to these people” (22). “We have come to see bugs as little monsters'' (24). This tells me that insects are known to be a negative thing without people knowing the benefits. “The nutritional benefits of eating insects give us a good reason to do so” (Lewis 25). Lewis writes, “Cicadas contain the same amount of protein per pound as beef” (25). Also, most insects tend to be gluten free, so people that need to eat those foods have various options. According to the video “Edible Insects,” “Insects also contain Iron and other important vitamins and minerals such as zinc and calcium.” This exemplifies that insects are very good for your health and body, Thus, farming insects requires far fewer resources than farming animals. “Farming insects puts less strain on the environment” (Lewis 25). This shows me that farming insects release a lot less greenhouse gases than if you were farming animals. Henceforth, “Some bugs can lay thousands of eggs at a time and it can take only a few days for some species to reach adulthood” (25). This means that insect farmers will be able to produce plentiful amounts of food very quickly and proves that there will be more people fed because of this increase in our food
