The book starts off with with Larry Ellison in the middle of a race from Sydney to Hobart on his boat Sayonara. Larry is the billionaire CEO of Oracle and is also an avid sailor. In the race the wind is at about 30-40 knots and they are barely keeping control of the boat. As the race goes on all of the boats go through a hurricane near the tip of Cape Horn, where some of the most brutal sailing conditions are. As they go through the hurricane Larry’s tactician (Chris Dickson) and Larry decide they have to change their course because the hurricane is too strong. After battling through the storm they finish the race in first with everyone okay and no severe injuries. The book then focuses on Norbert, a radiator repair man in San Francisco. Norbert is the son of two immigrants and he owns Alouis Radiator Repair which his father created. As the book follows Norbert it talks about how his parents immigrated and what his life was like. Then, the book returns to the present as Norbert goes to the Golden Gate Yacht Club. The Golden Gate is a small yacht club that was overshadowed by the St. Francis which was another yacht club nearby and it was much nicer and a lot fancier. As Larry looks at different yacht clubs he visits the Saint Francis and is going to try to win the America’s Cup with them. However, Larry and the rest of the people on team Oracle (the America’s Cup team Larry created) who are negotiating with the Saint Francis cannot make a deal. The Saint Francis keeps asking for more control of the team than Larry is willing to give. For example, the Saint Francis did not want the boat’s name to be Oracle and they would not guarantee that Larry would skipper if they won and were
