Rhetoric, when used properly, can be a very effective communication skill. However, a large majority of students do not even understand proper rhetoric or even know what rhetoric is. Rhetoric should be taught in high schools because , while also giving students effective ways of influencing and interpreting culture.
Understanding what rhetoric is can be very effective. One may argue that rhetoric is no longer relevant in modern society. However, one can find rhetoric everywhere- from newspaper articles to a simple conversation with friends or family. Heinrichs gives a specific example, through an encounter with his son. He describes how after arguing who used all of the toothpaste, he persuaded his son that he was triumphant in the argument.

John White of North Florida University, in his excerpt "The Cyclical Rhetoric of Educational Reform and the Rationalization of a Failed Zeitgeist" White can be quoted with "Understanding the role of language in a reform movement is imperative to gaining a true understanding of the ideology of that movement". (White). The knowledge of rhetoric can help in determining the outcome of society. Students learning rhetoric as early as high school will aid in paving the modern cultural path.
While being a great tool for structuring modern society, the use of rhetoric can also be used in interpreting society. Those in society that are trained in the art of rhetoric have an abundance of influential power, so being able to comprehend when they are using rhetoric is important. Being able to determine when one is using rhetoric is helpful. Heinrichs mentions fallacies, and how "an ability to detect a fallacy helps you protect yourself" (Heinrichs 138). With the understanding of when the speaker in an argument messes up, students would be able to be safer in their arguments and much more 'protected'.
Students would really benefit in the study of rhetoric. Many precious qualities are contained within rhetoric. Not only would they benefit from rhetoric’s valuable argumentative qualities, but they would also benefit in interpreting as well as shaping modern
