Who are you Living for Quote: “Better to write for yourself and have no public than to write for the public and have no self.” -Cyril Connolly Although Mr.Connolly was a writer, I believe this quote goes a lot deeper than writing. From a career or literal standpoint this quote may seem foolish because one goal most writers possess is to have their creations out in public, but when looking at this quote from a different standpoint it is clear to see that this quote is extremely wise, well written, and relevant. Connolly was surely an intelligent man. His idea that life is more than fitting into society's unrealistic standards is one that is extremely relatable. it is important for a person to never try to be anyone other than who they are and to not adhere to the standards set by their peers and the people around them. For example, imagine someone spent New Year's Eve in church. They could have many reasons for doing this. Maybe it is because it is what they have always done and they didn't want to do anything else, or it is just what they like to do and where they like to be, but whatever the reason is a lot of people view their actions in a negative light because people believe that is not what New Year's Eve is about, but why care? it's relation to the quote the person in the situation is right for doing what they want to do and being themselves regardless of whether society agrees. Mr Connolly would applaud this person for not changing themselves in order to fit in with the people around them and consequently forget who they are remembering this quote and living by it has the ability to make someone stronger and turn them into an overall better
