On June 8, 2010, eleven year old, Jorge Tarin, told a school counselor he was going to kill himself after school. Because he could not bear being hit by his father anymore. Jorge’s school sent him home due to the lack of power they possessed to keep him and the lack of knowledge on his family history. The same day a social worker and a police officer visited the Tarin family, the home was declared safe to keep a child in, without any real knowledge of the family. They left the home without knowing Jorge had previously spent fifteen months in foster care due to past abuse from his father, who no longer maintained rights to see or live in the same house as his child.

Stevie mother, Bernice father was an alcoholic and abused his children while they lived in the “back hills of West Virginia” (S James, 2002). Bernice didn’t want Stevie when she found out that she was pregnant with a married man’s child.

While watching over a student in her care suffering from the disease, Mary Lyon contracted Erysipelas: an infectious skin disease. Only 52 years old, Mary Lyon died in her apartment after living a full and successful life. Born February 28, 1979, to Aaron and Jemima Lyon in Buckland, Massachusetts, Mary was the sixth of eight children.
Howard Dully, a normal 12 year-old, acted like a normal everyday kid. He would pick on his siblings, struggle with some subjects in school, and liked to scare people. But his stepmother, Lou, thought that he was a troublemaker. She was told, from Dr. Freeman, that a lobotomy was the way to go. A 12 year-old boy should never have to go through such an inhumane procedure.
The film Including Samuel discusses the difficulties of inclusion. The film follows several families and their experiences with inclusion. Each person presented in the film experienced a different version of inclusion, and with their experience arose diverse challenges. Including Samuel follows people varying in age with a variety of disabilities. The documentary successfully established the difficulties of inclusion within an educational institution.
As a teenager, it is typically considered a right-of-passage to misbehave, act moody, be short-tempered, or slack off in school. Unfortunately, these behaviors are often symptoms of underlying issues. Depression is a common problem among adolescents, but is infrequently recognized among parents or teachers.
The novel focuses on certain behaviours that make young people more susceptible to suicide - the inability to grieve in a proper way and the lack of understanding and empathy from adults. For example, instead of helping these young people to express the emotions they are feeling over the deaths of friends or coping with intense stresses and difficult situations, The Program's very existence is pushing these teens to bury their feelings, creating more problems. David and Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell introduces the theory to expect the unexpected when it comes to a mighty versus weak situation. Gladwell relays that being the more equipped, stronger, and bigger opponent doesn't ensure a victory and to never discount the “weaker” opponent.

Neil’s father, Mr. Perry was responsible for his son’s suicide. “Neil couldn’t deal with the idea that to give up acting was to quit playing the roles that he lived every day, and so he killed himself because he “realized that he had not lived” up to that point” (See). Neil was not an honest person to himself or his father. Neil’s father wants the best for him and is able to give him the best education. “You have opportunities that I never even dreamt of and I am not going to let you waste them” (Schulman).
“Depression is a disorder most commonly associated with adolescent suicide” (Hittleman 1). When the pain is too hard to endure, some choose to intentionally end their own lives. Teens usually face more difficulties than tweens, yet they’re not as mature as adults, making them the most vulnerable victims of depression. In Jay Asher’s novel Thirteen Reasons Why, he made an accurate portrayal of depression by delineating the pessimistic thoughts of protagonist Hannah Baker throughout her story, and without receiving succor from her friends, teachers or parents, committed suicide to end an unabated affliction. Depression is an agonizing experience, yet it can be imperceptible from outside.
Over the years the issue of suicide has been slowly increasing. It is now the third leading cause of death among young people. The effects of suicide are tragic and felt long after the individual has taken their own life. Some people who consider suicide, however, never make a “serious” attempt at it. For every attempted suicide, there is said to be more than one person whose thought of suicide has never translated into an actual attempt.
