It is known that there are many benefits to your health due to riding a horse, many of which improve your life quality. A specific example of one of these health benefits is blood pressure. The effects on your blood pressure due to riding a horse improves over time with consistent riding. To properly measure blood pressure, you must follow a certain order of specific steps. To measure, you can use the arteries in your arm or neck, and either use an inflatable or digital cuff (BMJ, 2001). Regular exercise helps regulate blood pressure and keep it at a healthy level. Riding horses help the rider maintain balance, gain core strength, improve their posture, and tone muscles as well (Lees 2017). When riding a horse you can burn many calories. For riding horseback you can burn up to 200 calories without even getting on the horse. Just getting the horse ready for an hour ride takes a lot. When you get on the horse to ride, not only does it help your core and tone your body; for one hour of riding you can burn up to 360 calories (Sherwood Riding School, 2018). “We all know riding horses is good exercise,” Sigler said. “Riding a horse for 45 minutes at a walk, trot and canter can burn up to 200 calories. It you do something a bit more strenuous such as cutting or reining, that can come out to nearly seven calories per minute for the entire length of the riding period” (Fannin, 2015). Sigler made an example of riding a horse at a trot, a jog to humans, and also reining for a research project on the benefits of riding a horse. 20 different people did a 45 minute test with the horse to measure their blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen.
